About this event

The format

The DataCafé is an informal event for researchers from all disciplines and career stages and other interested staff. It is organised by Ghent University Library's data stewards.

The event aims to engage members of the UGent research community with the various aspects of Research Data Management (RDM).

It wants to give them a platform to present their own perspectives and practices, share experiences, and discuss challenges and solutions.

The format entails three 15-minute talks by researchers, ample time for discussion, and opportunities for networking over a few drinks (it is a 'café' after all...)!

Programme

This inaugural edition of the DataCafé will focus on the theme of Open Science. It will address topics such as:

  • What are the benefits of Open Science and data sharing for researchers?
  • How can they implement open practices in their own research and data management workflows?
  • What are potential obstacles?

Our line-up includes three guest speakers from different faculties and fields of study, who are advocates for and practitioners of Open Science:

  • Charlotte Eben is a final-year PhD student at the department of Experimental Psychology. Under the supervision of prof. Frederick Verbruggen, she investigates cognitive (control) mechanisms and their role in gambling. As a member of the CoBE lab, she has been practicing Open Science since the beginning of her PhD.
  • Dirk Seidensticker is a postdoctoral researcher in Archaeology investigating how knowledge is transmitted among potters over generations. Before coming to Ghent, he was part of the eScience-Center of the University of Tübingen and worked on the development of a web-based research environment for the spatial humanities. His research involves contributions to multiple Open Science projects, most prominently the R package c14bazAAR, a tool that queries and unifies multiple databases with radiometric data. You can find Dirk and his research on github.
  • Pieter Colpaert is a professor at IDLab - ELIS (Ghent University - imec), researching public Web APIs and Linked Data, and teaching big data science. His PhD focused on publishing transport data for maximum reuse. During a 3-year post-doc period he was the technology coordinator of the Smart Flanders program and applied Linked Data publishing on other themes such as smart cities, digital twins, administrative simplification, digital heritage, railway infrastructure, logistics, metadata, hypermedia, time series, etc. As a co-founder of Open Knowledge Belgium and prominent open data advocate, he is no stranger to Open Science. Find out more about Pieter on his online profile.

For the DataCafé, our guest speakers will talk about what they are doing to make their research as open as possible, their motivations for doing so, where such practices have led them, etc.
